Kanchipuram Saree and The Tale of Three

The name ‘Kanchipuram’ itself speaks volumes about the richness of the fabric. We all know about the Sage Markanda whose descendants were associated with weaving the fabric. The traditional patterns, royal fabric, and grandeur exude the regal heritage of the saree. Woven from pure mulberry silk that comes from South India, zari from Gujarat, this fabric is also known as ‘Pattu silk’ in Tamil.

Weaving Tale of Kanchipuram saree:

Kanchipuram saree is weaved using three shuttles. At the right side of the shuttle there is one weaver, and to the left another weaver. The border of the saree will be in contrasting colors and designs of beautiful motifs like peacock, annapakshi, paisley, chakram, yali, and floral motifs that have their own story to add value to the traditional silk.

The color and design of the whole six-yard are done separately from the borders of the saree. The three parts are weaved independently and then joined together. This weaving is unique from other sarees. Again, if the pallu has more than one shade they are weaved separately which are joined afterward.
